How Our Probate Team Helps Executors
If you have been named as an executor in a will, or you are the closest relative of someone who died without one, the job of dealing with their estate falls to you. We can handle every step, including:
- Contacting banks, pension providers and other asset holders
- Valuing the estate and preparing the HMRC forms
- Paying any Inheritance Tax due
- Applying for the Grant of Probate or Letters of Administration
- Selling or transferring property
- Settling debts and sharing the estate between beneficiaries
Fixed Probate Fees with No Surprises
For estates worth less than £325,000, we charge a fixed fee of £795 plus VAT (£954 in total) to obtain the Grant of Probate or Letters of Administration. Where there is no will, an extra £288 plus VAT applies, as the intestacy rules add more work.
The Probate Registry fee is currently £526, and copies of the grant cost £2 each. For larger estates, or if you would like us to run the whole administration from start to finish, we will give you a written estimate before any work begins, so you know exactly where you stand.
How Long Does Probate Take?
We usually prepare and submit the application within six to eight weeks. The grant then tends to arrive around 16 weeks later, although the timing rests with the Probate Registry once the forms are in.
We also advise executors to wait six months from the date of the grant before sharing out the estate. This protects you personally against later claims under the Inheritance (Provision for Family and Dependants) Act 1975.
When Someone Dies Without a Will
Without a will, the estate passes under the intestacy rules, and these do not always match what the person would have wanted. Unmarried partners, for example, have no automatic right to inherit. We explain who is entitled to what and apply for Letters of Administration on your behalf.
If the family agrees the shares should be changed, we can prepare a Deed of Variation for a fixed fee of £950 plus VAT.
